Freshman Amanda Peterson of the Eastern Washington University track and field team was named the Big Sky Conference Field Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Al Manuel Invitational in Missoula, Mont., April 5. This week Peterson will be competing in Cheney, Wash., at the 37th Annual Pelluer Invitational April 10-11.
Peterson, from Gig Harbor, Wash., qualified for the NCAA West Regionals and the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships with a throw of 152-6 in the javelin at the Dusty Lane Invitational (March 15). At the Al Manual Invitational, she improved her mark to 154-5, which ranks her sixth in school history.
Peterson will be competing at the Pelluer Invitational in the javelin at noon Pacific time Friday (April 11) against EWU record-holder Carolee Gutierrez, who will be competing unattached. Gutierrez had a record-breaking throw of 175-7 in 2007 before earning All-America honors with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
