Seniors Named Field Athletes of the Week for Second Straight Week

April 10, 2007

The accolades, the wins and the records keep on coming for Eastern Washington University track and field seniors David Paul and Carolee Gutierrez.

For the second straight week, they were named the Big Sky Conference Field Athletes of the Week for their performances at the 36th Annual Pelluer Invitational in Cheney, Wash., April 6.

They also received the same honors on April 3 after their performances at the Al Manuel Invitational in Missoula, Mont. Paul is a 2002 graduate of Yelm (Wash.) High School and Gutierrez graduated in 2002 from Newport (Wash.) High School.

Paul, who set the school record in Missoula in the hammer throw at 214-2, broke it again in Cheney with a throw of 216-11. The mark ranks as the seventh-best in the nation this year. The league record is 219-8 set by Karim Chester of Northern Arizona in 2005.

Last week, Paul won the hammer throw and the discus (167-4) and placed third in the shot put (43-4 1/2). He has qualified for the NCAA West Regional Championships in all three events.

Gutierrez threw 164-6 in the hammer, 155-10 in the javelin, 45-6 1/2 in the shot put and 146-3 in the discus to win all four events at the Pelluer Invitational. Her shot put now ranks her fourth all-time in school history and her discus was also a personal best. She qualified for the Big Sky Conference Championships in all four events and for the NCAA West Regional Championships in the javelin. She set the Big Sky record in the javelin with a throw of 167-9 in Missoula on March 31.

Both will compete at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif, April 15. The Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships are May 11-12 in Pocatello, Idaho, and the NCAA West Regional Championships are May 25-26 in Eugene, Ore.
