Seven high school athletes from the state of Washington have signed letters of intent to attend Eastern Washington University and compete in track and field for the Eagles.
The signees include thrower Erica Chaney from Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, Wash., as well as sprinter Krystal Deyo from Castle Rock High School. Deyo won five State 2A titles in the last three seasons during a four-year run of competing at the State 2A/1A/B Championships at EWU's Woodward Field.
Besides Chaney and Deyo, other female athletes signed were Lindsey Diaz from Heritage High School in Vancouver; Jessica Duran from Kent-Meridian HS; and Kristin Felderman from Rainier Christian (she competed for Mt. Tahoma HS). Male athletes signed included Erik Church from Thomas Jefferson HS in Federal Way, Wash., and Stephen Praast from Ravensdale, Wash., and Tahoma HS.
Erica Chaney - Spokane, Wash. (Gonzaga Prep HS '06)
-- Chaney closed her high school career by finishing fourth in the shot put (41-5 1/2) and sixth in the discus (122-1) at the State 4A Championships. As a junior she was second in the shot put (41-4). She set school records in the shot put (42-10 1/2) and discus (133-0), and has a personal record in the javelin of 120-0.
Krystal Deyo - Castle Rock, Wash. (Castle Rock HS '06)
-- Deyo won five individual State 2A titles, including a long jump championship as a senior (17-5). As a junior she won the 100 (12.37), 200 (25.39) and the long jump (18-1 1/2), and as a sophomore she won the title in the 100 (12.80). She was also fourth as freshman in the 100 (12.87) and her sophomore season was sixth in the long jump (16-6).
Lindsey Diaz - Vancouver, Wash. (Heritage HS '06)
-- Diaz finished 69th as a senior at the State 4A Cross Country Championships after placing 77th as a junior.
Jessica Duran - Kent, Wash. (Kent-Meridian HS '06)
-- Duran won the State 4A title in the 300-meter hurdles (44.66) as a senior, and was also seventh in the 100 hurdles (14.95) and seventh in the shot put (37-11). She is a potential heptathlete at EWU.
Kristin Felderman - Ravensdale, Wash. (Rainier Christian '06)
-- While competing for Mt. Tahoma High School, Felderman finished fifth or better in the 400 meters for three-straight years at the State 4A Championships. She was third as both a senior (56.99) and junior (57.52) and was fifth as a sophomore (58.27).
Erik Church - Federal Way, Wash. (Thomas Jefferson HS '06)
-- He placed 48th as a senior at the State 4A Cross Country Championships. Twice he earned All-South Puget Sound League honors in cross country, and helped lead his team to a league title in 2004. He also earned All-SPSL honors as a baseball centerfielder.
Stephen Praast - Ravensdale, Wash. (Tahoma HS '06)
-- He closed his high school career with a second-place finish at the State 4A Championships in the high jump (6-6). As a junior he was fourth (6-6). His leaping ability also helped him set various blocked shots records in basketball as he earned All-South Puget Sound League honors as a senior. An honor student with a 3.4 grade point average, he was a Seattle Times Scholar-Athlete in his junior year.
