Eastern earns prestigious academic honor for 10th time in school history
The Eastern Washington volleyball team once again finds itself among the nation's top academic programs, earning the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 10th time in program history as announced by the organization Wednesday (Aug. 7).
The Eagles are one of 130 NCAA Division I teams to receive the prestigious award this year. The 130 honorees are the most in the AVCA's history since the advent of the award in the 1992-93 academic year.
No stranger to academic success, Eastern was recognized by the AVCA for seven consecutive seasons beginning in 1999. Current head coach Wade Benson saw EWU earn five AVCA Team Academic Awards during his previous tenure from 2000-07. Eastern most recently earned the award at the conclusion of the 2010 season.
Four other Big Sky schools earned recognition from the AVCA as Idaho State, Montana, Northern Colorado and Southern Utah also received the award.
To be considered for the AVCA Team Academic Award, a team must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 throughout the academic year.
Eastern begins preparation for its 2013 campaign next week before welcoming its alumni back to Reese Court on Sunday, Aug. 18, at noon.
