Lexington, Ky. – The Eastern Washington women's volleyball program once again finds itself among the nation's academic elite, earning the AVCA Team Academic Award for the second consecutive season and 11th time in program history, the organization announced Monday, Aug. 4.
The Eagles are one of 134 NCAA Division I programs to be recognized with the prestigious award this year. The 134 honorees are the most in the AVCA's history since the advent of the award in the 1992-93 academic year.
No stranger to academic success, Eastern was recognized by the AVCA for seven consecutive seasons beginning in 1999. Current head coach Wade Benson saw EWU receive five AVCA Team Academic Awards during his previous tenure from 2000-07. Eastern also earned distinction following its 2010 campaign.
Five other Big Sky programs received recognition from the AVCA as Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Northern Colorado and Southern Utah also earned distinction.
The AVCA Team Academic Award honors collegiate and high school volleyball programs that maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale throughout an academic year.
EWU kicks off its season with its annual alumni match on Sunday, Aug. 24.
